“Cybersecurity is still more of an art, more of a trade craft than a science,” said Celeste Matarazzo, a cybersecurity researcher at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Matarazzo says the challenge for data scientists is to bring new thinking and rigorous scientific methodology to defend the computers and networks and data we use.
We need to know which network properties we care about and what constitutes a change in those properties and which changes are statistically significant, she said. Matarazzo and her colleagues have been researching these questions for several years, using methods including heuristic-based analysis, probabilistic trending of the network, and human interactive exploration. Matarazzo gave her talk during the Women in Data Science (WiDS) Conference at Stanford on Nov. 2, 2015.
